THE RACE
Team
Diabetes sends runners to marathons in Dublin, Honolulu, Rome
and Reykjavik - I chose Reykjavik because I've had a longstanding
fascination with Iceland, and because the race is on August 19th
and seven months seemed like a reasonable length of time to prepare.
The
Reykjavik Marathon is a small international marathon that began
in 1984.
In
2005 they had around 2000 runners, of which almost 200 were Team
Diabetes Canada members. This year they are hoping to increase
that number to 300, each of whom must raise a minimum of $6,100.00
for the Canadian Diabetes Association - that's over $1.8 million!
But we can't do it without support
from our friends and family.
While
most of my training will take place in the heat of a Canadian
summer, Reykjavik is the world's most northern capital city and
temperatures in mid-August are generally a comfortable 12-14° celcius.
The race will begin and end in the heart of Reykjavik, following
a course that is largely coastal and winds around the entire city.
The
event is small as marathons go, but there will be no shortage
of spectators as the race coincides with Reykjavik Cultural Night
- an annual event attended last year by over 70 000 Icelandics!
Þakka
